Trying something new... QUILTING!!!!

So lately, I haven't really had much motivation for paper crafting…. Even though we have a show coming up, I wasn't finding any new project I WANTED to work on. That's why I decided to try something totally new…. SEWING!!!!! So I asked my Mom if she could show me how to use her spare sewing machine.

Now I haven't TOUCHED a sewing machine since at least 7th grade. It wasn't just sewing I wanted to do…. but QUILTING.  Was I crazy for jumping into this right away??? Not when there is YOUTUBE…. and wonderful ladies like Susan Weinroth!!!! Here the tutorial she wrote:

HOW TO QUILT

MORE OF SUSAN's QUILTS

Off to the store I went… I found this Fat Quarter pack & loved the colors so I started cutting 4 1/2" squares. I later cut out 5 1/2" squares when I decided I wanted to try a bigger one!

Once the squares were sewn together, now the hard part was picking out coordinating fabric for the backing and binding… I spent AN HOUR in Joanns…

Added the large border

Binding strips cut, pieced together, then pressed in half...

I pin basted the layers together for the first quilt, which drove me crazy so I later decided to spray bast… making it soooo much easier!!!! Even with the walking foot, pin basting still caused shifts in the layers and caused bunching.

Sewing on the binding..

All done!!!  Ignore the mistakes... it's NOT pretty, but I'm happy I did it.  Now time to move to the monster....  :O)~

Here is the bigger one spray basted… Still had bunching, BUT not nearly as bad. I'm sure with practice, it'll get better!!!

Quilting is DONE!!!!!!!! Since I was NOT about to try free motion <creating random designs>, I chose to use the basic quilting in straight lines.

2nd quilt DONE!!!!! I found a better tutorial for hand stitching and this time it took me 1/2 the time to finish the binding on this one that it did the little one. (Getting better already…LOL)

I will probably use the big quilt for a photography prop for babies to lay on or a headshot backdrop for them…..

No surprise here…. My cat gets herself involved in EVERYTHING!!!!!
